In mining, a "mucker" is one that shovels away broken waste rock into mining cars and buckets. Due to the nature of the work, muckers were often the strongest, toughest, hardest workers guys around -- definitely not dudes you wanted to mess with. Over the years, the term "mucker" has also become synonomous in sports, particularly hockey, with a tough, hard-nosed player willing to "do the dirty work" and wreak havoc with his body and stick work.
