In our experience, it's near impossible to say the word "Appleknockers" without a grin or chuckle. It's fun to say and the possible definitions the mind conjures up for the term are hilarious. But a small town in southern Illinois' orchard country has used the "Appleknockers" name for its school teams since at least the 1940's. Truth is, in times past, when an orchard's crop of apples got too big for the trees to handle, the orchard would send out tall, strong men armed with long sticks to knock some of the apples out of the trees. These men became known as "appleknockers." And the perfect name for a baseball team (and the inspiration for this vintage Appleknockers Baseball tee) was born -- Appleknockers: big, strong guys knocking apples out by swinging a big stick.
